With an empty tube of this type, in 1888 emphasised that there are rays of light colored to anode who moved to the cathode, ie in the opposite direction compared to katodnih. To see these rays regardless of katodnih Goldstein had the idea of drill allowing cathode-ray to pass through the various holes or "channels" behind the cathode, in an area where you could clearly see. Goldstein himself coined for these rays known as "channel-ray" (kanalstrahlen).  We quickly discovered that this was positive ions in the gas tube, which moved attracted to the cathode and passed through the holes, light emitting if energy was enough.
